[Okay. He's loathe to admit this at all, so he tries to think of a way to say it where it doesn't sound like, "Jason Todd figured out something better than me."] We were close. About the Deputy.

They may receive hints from the Sheriff on who they are searching for. What the people in the stocks have in common: they're all young.

They may know they're looking for someone young.

[...well that's not good. He's quiet, concern suddenly flooding his features.]

You think he'd give them that kind of hint? [A pause.] Then again, there's a lot of people who're considered "young" around here. Which means chances are high our next person to get locked up is going to be young as well.

I'd say it's coincidence, but three times now? It's too much. [He frowns.] We need to make sure you're guarded then.

Yes. If he is giving me hints, he must be giving them hints as well. And I can still press him for more information. Most of the time, he'll give me a straight answer. They could have done so, too.

[His lips pull into a tight frown.] I'm fine. I can handle myself.

But anyone else our age is up for going to the stocks. Papika, Yuki, yourself.

[He's worried about y'all more!!!]

...I need to tell you something else that I found out about the Sheriff, but one thing at a time. Also shut up, you're ten. I know you can handle yourself, but I can, too. And you're still worrying about me, aren't you? Papika and Yuna are definitely people we should be watching.

Maybe we should make a list of people in that "young" age range. It'll give us something to work with at least.

Me, you, Russell, Tohsaka, Papika, Yuki, Potter, Xion, Goodman. Those are the remaining ones who haven't been in the stocks yet.

...did you really have this list prepared? [He smirks a little, but.] Who says the Deputy won't repeat the pattern, too, just to throw us off?

[He gives Percy a look as if to say, "What?" about the list. Listen, he has a damn good memory, and he can quickly recall everyone their age who hadn't been in the stocks. Blame his father.] Irrelevant.

If this holds true, the Deputy has already made the error by putting three teenagers into the stocks already. Covering their motivations would have meant picking more adults already.

Good point. If he puts another teenager in the stocks this week we'll know there's definitely a pattern they're really looking for. That means we make sure they can't get a hole of you specifically. That means we figure out a way to keep the stocks safer from Bandits. Hal told me that it's kind of impossible, but we can try anyway.
